RIGHTS FEES

• The Sri Lankan government has awarded exclusive TV and radio rights for Sri Lanka’s international cricket matches played at home to the state-owned, Rupavahini. Sri Lankan environment minister, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, said broadcast rights of national level local and international cricket matches will be vested on state media institutions only. It is not immediately clear how this decision will implicate Ten Sports, currently the holder of those rights. In 2009, Ten Sports secured the rights for Sri Lanka cricket for 4 years from 2009-2013 with a reported $ 63 mil payout.

Korean commercial broadcaster, SBS, extended its deal with the IOC to cover exclusive broadcast rights for all Olympic Games between 2018 and 2024. SBS acquired rights across all media platforms in South Korea and North Korea. The agreement also includes broadcast commitment for four Youth Olympic Games in the same period. In Aug 2006, SBS paid $33 mil to televise the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 games, and a further $39.5 mil for Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 combined. The IOC previously dealt rights to the “Korean Pool”, which comprised SBS, KBS and MBC. The Beijing 2008 was the last to be broadcast by the pool.

• Meanwhile, Germany’s ARD and ZDF also concluded deals for Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 for broadcast rights across all media platforms. Two years ago, IOC asked for bids from German broadcasters for rights to 2014 and 2016 games. Pay-TV Sky Deutschland submitted a reported offer of €100 mil ($145 mil) and incumbent ARD and ZDF delivering a bid thought to be worth less than Sky’s. In an apparent attempt to pressure the IOC, ARD in Jan alluded that it would review broadcast commitments Olympic sport between games if it lost the rights going forward and claimed a private broadcaster could not match the level of Olympics coverage on public-service television.

• The Danish Superliga has called for fresh bids for broadcast rights after an earlier round drew unsatisfactory responses in Feb. The latest round is calling for bids on rights for 3 seasons starting 2012/13 to 14/15. The tender was believed to be strategically called for immediately after Champions League rights were awarded to Scandinavia’s Modern Times Group for rights covering Denmark, Norway and Sweden from 2012/13 to 14/15. The earlier tender had reserve prices of DK380 mil ($72m) /season for all packages on offer while currently running deals are collectively worth DK354 mil /season from 2009/10 to 11/12.
