HEADLINES OF THE DAY

CWC Champ Internacional to Face Nacional in Copa Libertadores

Club World Cup and defending champion Internacional will face Nacional of Uruguay, Emelec of Ecuador and either Argentina's Velez Sarsfield or Danubio of Uruguay in the first round of the Copa Libertadores. The Brazilian club, which beat FC Barcelona for the club world title on Sunday, was placed in Group 4 on Wednesday for South America's continental club championship beginning next month.

Boca Juniors of Argentina and Toluca of Mexico were paired together in Group 7, considered one of the toughest of the eight groups. Boca and Toluca were joined by Bolivar of Bolivia and as-yet-undetermined side from Peru. Boca's crosstown archrival in Buenos Aires, River Plate, will face Copa Sudamericana runner-up Colo Colo of Chile in Group 6 along with Deportivo Caracas of Venezuela and either Tacuary of Paraguay or Liga de Quito of Ecuador. Tacuary and Liga face off in one of six preliminary phase pairings.

The 48th edition of the Copa Libertadores features 38 teams, 35 of them from South America and three from Mexico. The preliminary phase will be played Jan. 24 through Feb. 7, with the six winners advancing to the second round that runs from Feb. 14 until April 25. The subsequent rounds conclude with final leg championship matches June 13 and June 20.

Wednesday's draw at the headquarters of the South American soccer confederation (CONMEBOL) in suburban Asuncion was staged with the help of Boca Juniors goalkeeper Aldo Bobadilla, a Paraguayan, as well as Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo and Peruvian soccer hero Teofilo Cubillas.

Nicolas Leoz, president of the soccer federation Conmebol, closed Wednesday's draw by handing over a replica of the Copa Libertadores trophy to Internacional team executives. He also paid a salute to Elizondo, the Argentine referee who supervised the opening and closing matches at the World Cup in Germany. Elizondo last week announced his retirement. Squash Confirmed As Commonwealth Games 'Core Sport'

At a recent meeting in Malaysia, the Executive Board of the Commonwealth Games Federation confirmed that Squash would be one of the 'Core Sports' of the Games. The decision came following a detailed report from the Federation's Sports Committee pertaining to the Sports programme of the Games. It was agreed that Squash would be one of ten sports which "shall be obligatory" on the programme – including Athletics, Aquatics (Swimming), Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball (Women), Rugby Sevens (Men) and Weightlifting.

“The Commonwealth Games Sports Programme is proudly 'of and for the Commonwealth of Nations'," said Michael Hooper, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation. "Squash’s addition to the list of core sports for future editions of the Commonwealth Games is reflective of this and the sport's overall depth and quality within the Commonwealth today.

"Since the sport's introduction to the Games programme in 1998, the level of participation and excellence continues to grow and at the recent Commonwealth Games in Melbourne we saw 29 participating nations. With the commitment to the sport's further development across the Commonwealth by World Squash, we expect to see this continue to rise – we welcome Squash as a core partner within the Commonwealth Games movement.”

Jahangir Khan, the record ten-times British Open champion who is President of the World Squash Federation (WSF), added: "WSF is delighted to be named a Core Sport for future editions of the Commonwealth Games and I would like to thank President Michael Fennell and the team at the CGF for acknowledging Squash's role toward the success of the Games.

"Squash and the Commonwealth Games form a natural partnership because the sport is played in virtually every Commonwealth country - and the level is truly world-class, as demonstrated in Melbourne. "WSF looks forward to working with the CGF to ensure the success of Delhi 2010 and future editions," Khan concluded. Source:

Don King: Pacquiao-Barrera 2, DK Hounds Roach

During a recent press dinner in the Philippines, Freddie Roach, trainer of Manny Pacquiao, revealed to the Cebu Sun Star that promoter Don King has been calling almost every day in an effort to sign Pacquiao, who is in the middle of a lawsuit between promotional companies Top Rank and Golden Boy Promtions. Both companies claim the right to promote Pacquiao.

Roach thinks that Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions will win the suit because Top Rank has no legal claim to Pacquiao, who initially signed with Golden Boy, and then signed a contract with Top Rank a few months later. Roach feels that Pacquiao will face Marco Antonio Barrera in his next fight, which should be in April on HBO pay-per-view. The lawsuit, which Roach wants to avoid, could possibly keep Pacquiao away from the ring for up to 6 months. The fight in April against Barrera is the biggest money fight for Pacquiao. Source:

India/New Media: Time Broadband, the new player in Indian TV broadcasting

Time Broadband Services (TBSL) is to launch IPTV services. The company is not part of the Times of India group – it is an independent company founded by three entrepreneurs with a technological background, Sujata Dev, Amit Dev and Tushar Shah. TBSL plans to be in the B2B space and roll out IPTV services called My Time in association with wired telecom service providers such as Tata Telecom, Bharti Teleservices, Reliance Telecom and the state owned BSNL, and MTNL, which has rolled out IPTV services in New Delhi.

TBSL is yet unable to disclose details of a deal with any of these telecom operators. TBSL claims to have around 100 channels on its platform. The USP of My Time will be international special interest channels not available on regular platforms such as DTH or C&S. My Time has positioned itself as a content aggregator and it will be a conduit between telecom operators and the content industry. The services it offers will include interactive games, chat, SMS, polls/voting through television and the soon to be launched video phone through a common delivery platform.

IPTV has witnessed success in most parts of the world – the US, China, Italy and Germany are some of the countries that have seen explosive growth in this sector. The global IPTV market is estimated to be worth US$2 billion and India, with China, is expected to contribute almost half of this growth. Source:

India/New Media: Maxis readies bid for Hutch Essar

Posing serious competition to the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group, Maxis of Malaysia is finalising a bid for Hutchison Essar, the third largest private mobile operator in India. After the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and European telecom major Vodafone, Maxis is the third serious suitor for Hutchison Essar. An acquisition will give the successful bidder a strong footprint in India, the world’s fastest growing mobile market. Maxis already has a presence in India after it bought Aircel, which operates mobile services in Tamil Nadu and Chennai, apart from five other circles, and is now looking for a pan-India launch. China/New Media: IPTV Market Developing Slowly But Surely

China's IPTV market will go through a gradual but solid increase from 2006 to 2010, according to high-tech market research firm In-Stat. The industry environment for IPTV has improved, but the outlook is still not completely positive. Two more IPTV licences have been issued in China, and licence holders have achieved some progress with more local telcos. However, the government agency SARFT maintains tight control over content supervision and is using government policies to level the competition between IPTV and digital cable TV.

"China's IPTV ecosystem is still shaping itself," suggested Rebecca Tan, In-Stat analyst. "The ecosystem participants, centralised around telcos, are trying to find an effective model for co-operation. Telcos currently have to rely on content providers for programming while trying to gain content licences of their own, while content providers, represented by Shanghai Media Group, are managing to control end-users through IPTV." The Balance of Power in South America Shifted in '06

Now tell me it wasn't a shocker. Internacional's stunning 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the title game of the FIFA Club World Cup sent a message around the world: Soccer's balance of power is shifting toward clubs with a greater hunger to succeed. Inter's victory may well be the success story of the year if you're the kind of person who loves giant upsets on the biggest stages. It's always great to see top two sides battle it out, particularly when the stakes are so high. South American clubs cherish the opportunity to show their skill to the world, especially at the expense of one of Europe's most lucrative clubs.

Much of the reason behind the recent success of South American clubs is the outstanding internal quality of its major competitions, the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. These events have only increased in prominence in recent years, and their exciting formats mean that several different clubs are beginning to inflict pressure on the traditional heavyweights and are coming out on top.

This year was no exception, and no matter your vantage point, the continent has experienced numerous surprises. It all started in August when Internacional hoisted the Copa Libertadores after an amazing run that saw it edge out defending champion São Paulo in the final. The Porto Alegre-based club hadn't qualified for the competition in 12 years, but all of a sudden it was sweeping aside the top club in the tournament en route to the title. Inter's stunner over Ronaldinho's Barça last weekend only justified the achievement.

The year of the underdog has seen many South American clubs come back into the spotlight after long periods in mediocrity. Not only in Brazil, but also in Argentina -- a country whose league has mostly been dominated by its wealthier clubs. The conclusion of the season provided a shock of the highest magnitudes as cash-strapped Estudiantes de La Plata came from behind to snatch the title away from overwhelming favorite Boca Juniors.

Clearly the balance of power in South American competitions is shifting toward the direction of those clubs that have been starved for recognition in recent years, despite having experienced glorious pasts. The reason: Clubs are beginning to understand that there are several elements that characterize a championship team, with the most important being skill, attitude and determination.

Internacional is the prime example of this rebellion. Not only did the Colorado defeat a star-studded Barcelona side, but they did so with awesome temperament. Inter made history in superb fashion, and although deemed inferior when compared to its imposing opposition, it lived up to the expectations of its massive following back home. Said attacking midfielder Iarley, whose picture-perfect pass led to Luis Adriano's late goal, "The matches are won on the field, not with one's name."

Inter's victory once again verified that Brazilian clubs are still the most poised to win these kind of tournaments. Since the first club world championship in 2000, Brazilian clubs have had a tight lock on things. Despite the ongoing exodus of top players to Europe, its clubs continue to succeed, a trend many credit to the wealth of homegrown talent that continues to grow in Brazil.

The past year soccer was turned on its ear in South America, as clubs who haven't been consistently successful in recent years took center stage. While some clubs have proven that fighting spirit can always replace quality, Internacional went a further step to outline the main concept behind winning a major title. The Brazilians not only reaffirmed that determination is still a defining factor in the game, but also a quality that can get the best out of any club. Gregory Sica comments on

Premier Clubs Get TV Rights Lift

The Premier League sweetened the mood among club chairmen awaiting the findings of the Stevens bungs report yesterday by issuing an update on its overseas television rights sales. In an email circulated to senior club executives its chief executive, Richard Scudamore, revealed that the income from international rights sales stands at £600m and counting, an increase of 50% on the last three-year deal.

With several territories yet to settle deals, the astonishing rise in the overseas revenue will nudge the total income from the 2007-2010 rights towards the £3bn mark, a figure that will make the gulf between the top flight and the Championship even greater. It will also cause tremors of anxiety in mainland Europe where the impact of the Premiership's wealth is already being felt in the Champions League.

The timing of the £600m email is surely not coincidental, given the febrile climate that preceded publication of Stevens' findings, but in truth the club chairmen had little to fear from the report. It effectively cleared them of any wrongdoing despite the fact that 17 transfers in which their clubs were involved are still considered potentially crooked. Paul Kelso comments on

Elsewhere/Rights: Free TV to Use or Lose Big Sport

COMMERCIAL free-to-air television networks will be on notice to broadcast major sporting events or lose them to their rivals in pay television under changes to be unveiled today to Australia's anti-siphoning rules. Federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan will complete the final significant reshaping of the media landscape of 2006 by announcing new "use-it-or-lose-it" rules that will make it harder for free-to-air TV networks to lock up major sporting events.

The Age believes that today's announcement will not remove any events on the anti-siphoning list but will introduce a range of conditions that, if not followed, will mean events can be broadcast on pay-television networks. The minister's decision appears to give something to both commercial free-to-air and pay-TV networks, which have waged fierce, expensive lobbying and public relations campaigns all year to secure their stakes in the lucrative sports broadcasting market.

The free-to-air networks have stressed their role as providers of sport to all Australians, while the pay-TV networks have argued free-to-air networks have treated viewers with contempt by showing sporting events, such as the Bledisloe Cup rugby, late at night or not at all. Pay-TV networks seek out premium events as they are a strong subscription driver.

The anti-siphoning list was originally designed to ensure that ordinary Australians would have free television access to major sporting events such as the AFL grand final, the Melbourne Cup and the Olympics. The 1300-event anti-siphoning list includes many events that are not major and many that are not broadcast on free-to-air television. It is these events that the pay-television networks want to broadcast. Source:

Elsewhere/General: IPTV Doubles in 2006

New analysis from Point Topic shows that IPTV subscriber numbers doubled during the 12 months to 30 June 2006. The total number of people worldwide paying for TV services supplied via Internet Protocol increased from just under 1.5 million to almost 3 million. Europe is the most important region for IPTV, with the strongest growth in subscriber numbers during the period.

There have also been a large number of service launches. This growth reflects the developed and competitive pay-TV market in many European countries. Hong Kong’s PCCW remains the largest IPTV operator, with 444,000 paying IPTV subscribers, and a total of 654,000 TV connections (not all TV services require a paying subscription). France Telecom had over 300,000 paying customers, whilst Telefónica in Spain grew strongly to 267,000 TV subscribers. Source:

Elsewhere/General: Boxing Returns After 37 Years

The first professional boxing event in Sweden since 1969 is slated to take place next month in Gothenburg. Pro boxing was banned for 37 years until Sweden’s new government opened the door again and the company New Sweden is putting together the first promotion at Gothenburg’s Scandinavium arena, where a sell-out crowd of about 12,000 looks possible to welcome boxing back in the home town of the late Ingmar Johansson, Sweden’s world heavyweight champ of pre-Muhammad Ali days.

That boxing has changed dramatically in four decades will be highlighted by one of the Swedish star attractions being recruited for the debut event - female fighter Åsa Sandell, who fought Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali, last year (and lost in five rounds). The promoters are also trying to lure Sweden’s Armand Krajnc, former WBO middleweight champ, out of retirement.

Stockholm-based agency IEC In Sports has been appointed to handle television sales, both domestic and international. The final card will probably feature about 10 bouts. New Sweden is talking to American and European fighters about taking part in the event, which the company sees as the first in a new era of Swedish promotions. FIFA Reputation Tarnished After Ruling (Interesting read!)

December was not a good month for
FIFA — the lordly, all-embracing organization that rules the global game of soccer. At FIFA's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, they are used to being treated with awed respect. They expect to get their own way, and they usually do. Apparently, nobody told a U.S. district judge, Loretta Preska, about FIFA's sanctity. After presiding over a case in which MasterCard sued FIFA for breach of contract, Preska issued her judgment in favor of MasterCard, awarded them costs, and absolutely flayed FIFA for the way it conducted negotiations with MasterCard.

MasterCard has been FIFA's exclusive financial services sponsor for the past five World Cups. It's been an apparently satisfactory arrangement for both parties, with
Pelé bringing his immense personal charm as the Master-Card World Cup spokesman. The current contract expired with this summer's tournament in Germany. A new contract was under negotiation at the beginning of this year, in accordance with MasterCard's contractual first-refusal rights (or "first right to acquire" as FIFA prefers to name it).

But while FIFA was dealing with MasterCard, it was also talking to Visa. "FIFA's negotiators," says Judge Preska, "lied repeatedly to MasterCard" by not telling them they were speaking with Visa, and they "lied to Visa" when they repeatedly assured Visa that MasterCard had no first-refusal rights. Judge Preska confronts FIFA with its own "fair play" slogan, calling these negotiations "anything but fair play." Her report is a masterpiece — so clear, so concise, and so light on the legalese that it makes irresistible reading.

Briefly: FIFA marketing director Jerome Valcke and his associates negotiated with MasterCard and got everything they wanted — $180 million in cash, for an 8-year deal covering the World Cups to be staged in 2010 and 2014. Approval for the deal was voted by the three required FIFA committees, and a final contract was drawn up, signed by MasterCard, and couriered to FIFA. But it was never signed by FIFA. Unknown to MasterCard were FIFA's parallel negotiations with Visa, who — in Judge Preska's words — were being given "blow-by-blow descriptions of the status of the FIFA- MasterCard negotiations."

At the moment when FIFA appeared ready to clinch a deal with MasterCard, Valcke called Visa and told them that, if they upped their $150 million offer by $30 million (i.e. to match Master-Card's bid) they, and not MasterCard, would be FIFA's new financial services partner. Visa agreed. The Visa offer was then presented to the FIFA committee meeting and — in Judge Preska's words — "further to Mr Valcke's prior assurance ... that ‘Visa would be the partner,' Messrs. Valcke and [FIFA President Sepp] Blatter . . . then engineered that result at the FIFA board meeting." The Visa offer was actually presented as consisting of $195 million. The extra $15 million was termed "marketing in kind."

There followed the curious affair of differently dated contracts. Two copies of the Visa deal were signed by Blatter and
Visa International president Christopher Rodrigues on April 6, 2006. Both contracts were produced for the court: Visa's version bore the April 6 date, but the FIFA copy was dated April 3. The FIFA version also carried a "signature that, to the untrained eye, appears noticeably different from the signature on the Visa-produced version of the contract." FIFA offered no explanation for the discrepancy.

Well before these suggestions of skulduggery, the FIFA marketing department staff was clearly aware that things had gotten out of hand. Evidence from internal e-mails shows an anxiety to find a convincing reason to offer MasterCard for the rejection of its offer. One associate, Stefan Schuster ponders "how we (as FIFA) can still be seen as having at least some business ethics", and how to "make the whole f***-up look better for FIFA." Another associate, Robert Lampman sees nothing but trouble: "Guys ... having read all these exchanges upon wake up here it seems like a dream ... a nightmare that is! ... this is going to be very ugly."

Although under warning from MasterCard that legal action was pending, and they should not announce their deal, FIFA and Visa went ahead anyway, with a press conference on April 10.

FIFA reacted to the verdict on the same day: It would appeal the verdict in the Swiss courts and "fully expects to prevail." It also added: "FIFA remains convinced that at all times it acted in good faith." A statement that lost credibility only five days later, when FIFA summarily fired all four marketing negotiators — Valcke, Tom Houseman, Schuster, and Lampman — and admitted that "Even though the judgment has proved to be very biased in favor of MasterCard, the fact cannot be overlooked that FIFA's negotiations breached its business principles. FIFA cannot possibly accept such conduct among its own employees."

With that statement, FIFA is admitting the guilt of its employees, and greatly reducing the chances of a successful appeal. The revelations in Judge Preska's report are indeed devastating. FIFA clearly knows that it has a massive task ahead to ensure all of its many sponsors, present and future, that fair play reigns in Zurich. Paul Gardner comments on

HEADLINES OF THE DAY

Badminton World Federation To Spice Things Up

Malaysia's top two men singles players – Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim – could meet as early as the first round in the Malaysian Super Series following the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) decision to do away with the national separation ruling. Yesterday the BWF decided that they would not separate the top two players of a country in different halves of the draw during a council meeting at Hotel Istana here yesterday.

And to make it even more challenging, only the top two seeds will be divided into the two halves of the 32-player draw. The entries for the 12-leg Super Series are based on the order of the world rankings. Malaysia is the first leg of the series, which will be held from Jan 16-21 at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) Hall in Cheras. The BWF's deputy president Datuk Punch Gunalan said that the decision to scrap the national separation ruling was to spice up the Super Series meet.

Punch also announced several other decisions made by the council members yesterday. All the Super Series hosts will have to adhere to special presentation requirements:

* Scrapping the national separation rule in the Super Series
* Plasma televisions will be used to screen scores; online scoring will be compulsory; the court arena will be carpeted; and the on-court activities will be organised in a more orderly manner.
* BWF have also decided to appoint tournaments directors to ensure that the tournaments are carried out professionally. Council members will be chosen as the parttime tournament directors
* Paris, France would host the 2010 World Championships. Malaysia and India are hosts for the 2007 and 2009 meets. There will be no world championships during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
* Separation of Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to give the women team competition the prominence that it deserves
* The appointment of P. Ganga Rao as the new BWF general manager from Jan 1 (see related story below)
* BWF to move base from Kuala Lumpur Badminton Hall to Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.
* Introducing coach education course at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria.

P. Ganga Rao received the biggest promotion in his 20-year career in administration work when he was officially appointed as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) general manager on Sunday. Ganga starts work on Jan 1. Ganga will relinquish his post as the general manager of the BAM. However, he will remain as the secretary of the national body until a suitable candidate is found. Asian Games men’s badminton doubles gold medallist Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are set to miss the Malaysian Open which doubles up as the first leg of the Super Series at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium (KLBA) from Jan 16-21. The pair are currently ranked 119th in the world and it is not enough for them to make the cut for the opening leg. Only the top 60 in the world ranking list of the respective events gets direct entry into the Super Series. The top 28 go directly into the main while four others will come through the qualifying round, which involved a maximum of 32 players. Source:

Indonesia/Broadcaster: Investigation on TV stations Over Indecent Content

Indonesian authorities are investigating eight private television channels in the country for allegedly broadcasting indecent material and excessive violence. The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission lodged a complaint yesterday against the channels, after repeatedly issuing warnings that their programming violated government regulations.

The programs that are considered to violate obscenity include Fenomena (TV7), Dorce Show (Trans TV), Curhat (Lativi), Hitam Putih (Indosiar), Dewa-Dewi (TPI), Om Farhan (ANTV) and Panggung Hahahihi (SCTV). While the one that is considered violent is Hidayah (Trans TV). According to Ade, actually KPI has warned the television stations several times, but the warning was ignored. Deputy Head of Public Relations at Polri HQ, Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam, who accompanied Ade, said the police will coordinate first with the television stations.

It was the latest attempt by Indonesian government-funded agencies in recent months to ban content deemed immoral or violent, International Herald Tribune reports. Last month, the Film Censorship Institute or LSF banned four movies highlighting Indonesian troops’ misdeeds under former President Suharto’s dictatorship.

The LSF also directed a broadcaster to pull US wrestling shows off the air. The popular US wrestling programme “SmackDown” produced by the World Wrestling Entertainment, was forced off the air in November after parents and educators blamed it for the death of a nine-year-old boy whose friends had tried the fighting moves on him. Hong Kong/Broadcaster: PCCW Cashes In on Sports Deals With Plans to Raise Now TV Rates

PCCW plans to raise the monthly rates for its Now TV pay television service early next year in the wake of new sports content, TV and content managing director Dominic Leung said Monday. The monthly fee for the most expensive combination package, which currently includes all channels for HK$388, will be raised to more than HK$400 next year, Leung said.

PCCW's service, which lags behind iCable's Cable TV in subscriber numbers, made headlines recently when it won exclusive rights to broadcast the Uefa Euro 2008 football tournament and the next three years of English Premiership football matches. Market sources attribute iCable's success in recent years to its broadcasting of Premiership games, popular with Hongkongers.

In addition to raising rates for the combination package, Leung said PCCW will also raise rates for individual channels carrying the new content. Earlier, PCCW had announced that Now TV would be offering a price guarantee, which would allow current customers to subscribe to a sports package or an all-channels package at the same rate as before the announcement, allowing them to enjoy the new football content free.

PCCW's Now TV is the world's largest deployment of broadband television, also known as Internet protocol television, or IPTV. Sources said PCCW paid about HK$400 million for the deal to broadcast the European championship. PCCW won the license to broadcast the Premiership games for an estimated HK$1.56 billion. Source:

Elsewhere/General: Jetix Report Reveals Habits and Tastes of Children

Games consoles, TVs and mobile phones have eclipsed clothes and toys among consumer items favoured by children, according to a survey among seven- to 14-year-olds by European children's televison network Jetix Europe. The 'Kidometer' survey aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the lives of 7- to 14-year-olds in 10 European countries.

Unsurprisingly, the survey found that children are using a range of platforms for entertainment and reveal a growing desire to spend more time gaming on various consoles. However, despite the many different platforms for entertainment now available, TV was still the favourite and the medium where they were most likely to be exposed to advertising.

The research addresses how children spend their time and money and collates views on what children consider to be 'cool' in terms of people, products, words and advertising. The research involved 500 children divided equally by age group and gender. The online research is to be repeated each year in March and October. Source:

Pitch Battle – Setanta’s Challenge to BSkyB’s EPL Monopoly

From humble beginnings in a back room of an Ealing pub, Setanta Sports is now challenging Sky's monopoly on the Premiership. It all started with a simple £10 admission to the back room of a pub in Ealing. That is what Setanta Sports founders Michael O'Rourke and Leonard Ryan charged punters to watch a satellite feed of Ireland playing Holland in Italia 90. Pundits now value the company around the £600m mark; its ninth channel, Setanta Golf, is launched on January 8 and there is the appetising prospect of Premiership football next season.

Setanta has increasingly become the company to do business with in pay TV. Broadcasting in 24 countries, it has cannily taken advantage of the demand for British and Irish sports among expats in North America and Australia, while doing the same in reverse for US expats in Europe. Setanta's position has been consolidated in Ireland and Scotland since it secured broadcast rights for the Scottish Premier League in 2004-2005. It shares rights for rugby union's Celtic Magners League with BBC Wales and S4C.

The three-year Premiership deal cost £392m, while the PGA Tour cost $18m (£9.2m), twice the previous deal. Scottish Premier League rights were renegotiated for £55m.

Investors are eager to plough money into the company’s war-chest. Last week Doughty Hanson invested £213m, strengthening the link between Setanta and Irish commercial broadcaster TV3, which Hanson recently acquired. Setanta has also raised a reported sum of between €80m (£50m) and €90m (£60m) by selling its North American Sports Network to ESPN. This deal will also no doubt further bolster its Premiership war chest.

The name Setanta, by the way, derives from a figure from Celtic mythology who, aged five, was such an accomplished hurling player that he beat an entire team single-handed - he was renamed Cúchulainn (Hound Of Culann) after killing a vicious guard dog with his bare hands. Sixteen years on from the night Niall Quinn stuck the ball in the Dutch net, the future now hinges on a simple £15 subscription. Setanta is certain that there are plenty of people out there who will be happy to pay the price. All it has to do now is find them. Iestyn George comments on

Asia/Rights: ICC Impressed by 'Muscle' of New Global Rights Partner

The International Cricket Council said today that financial considerations were not the only factor in the award of comprehensive media rights to its major international tournaments, including World Cups, for the next eight years to pan-Asian cable and satellite broadcaster ESPN Star Sports. The television company, which is owned by media giants Walt Disney and News Corporation, has been appointed the ICC’s global media and production partner for its events from late 2007 to 2015.

The outcome was widely regarded as something of a surprise as ESPN Star Sports had only submitted an offer for rights in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East in the first round of bidding. There was a change of tactics in the second round and the sports broadcaster secured the global rights ahead of Nimbus Communications, the India-based sports marketing and media company, which is understood to have bid $900 million.

The other unsuccessful bidders included Indian media group Zee Telefilms, which increased its bid from $620 million to $850 million in the second round, and another regional cable and satellite broadcaster Ten Sports, which was bidding with Switzerland-based agency Infront Sports and Media and upped its offer from $750 million to $825 million. While not confirming the value of the deal, the ICC said it was ‘significantly in excess’ of its previous agreement with the News Corp-owned Global Cricket Corporation, which was worth $550 million over seven years and expires after the World Cup in the West Indies in March and April of 2007. The organisers of the Royal Trophy golf event in Bangkok next month, where Europe will take on Asia, have appointed Swedish company IEC in Sports to handle international television distribution in most of the world. The event, featuring five members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team against the cream of Asian players, is scheduled for January 12-14 at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok.

Europe’s team features four Swedes and IEC in Sports, which has come aboard late in the day, will be looking to add a Swedish television deal for coverage of the event. It will offer four hours of live coverage from all three days and a daily one-hour highlights show. Deals are already in place in the UK and Spain. CNBC already has Asian rights excluding Japan, Korea and India. IEC will be looking to sell the rights in those countries, as well as making terrestrial deals in other Asian territories, and adding broadcasters elsewhere in the world.

Europe’s team will be led by Seve Ballesteros (Spain) as captain, Darren Clarke (Northern Ireland), Johan Edfors (Sweden), Niclas Fasth (Sweden), Paul McGinley (Ireland), Henrik Stenson (Sweden), Anthony Wall (England), Lee Westwood (England) and Robert Karlsson (Sweden) joining him. Hong Kong/Broadcaster: Clients Keep i-Cable After Games Loss

The chairman of i-Cable Communications (1097), Stephen Ng Tin-hoi, said Cable TV has not lost many subscribers, nor is it finding it difficult to attract new ones, following its failure to retain broadcasting rights for the English Premier League. Cable TV also lost the rights to broadcast the European Championship in 2008, which was secured earlier this month by Cable TV's rival, Now TV, a unit of PCCW.

Malaysia/General: Indon May Join the KL Racket Club

Malaysia’s KL Racket Club (KLRC) are going international and could soon have a line-up to match the BA of Malaysia. Already, they have recruited two foreign players – John Moody of New Zealand and Andrew Smith of England – to play under the banner of the professional outfit owned by Datuk Andrew Kam Tai Yeow. And the icing on the cake looks set to be: Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

Andrew, currently the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) legal adviser and council member, would not deny or confirm speculation that Taufik was poised to join their set-up. Taufik has frequented the club several times this year for friendly matches. Malaysia could be an ideal base for Taufik as he prepares to re-claim the world title when the championship is hosted in Malaysia from Aug 12-19.

Although KLRC are opening theirs door for foreign players, Andrew says the priority remains in providing opportunities for local players. The KLRC was formed last year in June and has become a platform for dropouts from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to revive their badminton careers. Some of their top players are former internationals Sairul Amar Ayob and Lee Tsuen Seng.

The club received a major boost on Tuesday when they signed a sponsorship deal with Amer Sports (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, who own the Wilson brand. To make it more memorable, Sairul and Tsuen Seng, who were this year’s Dutch and New Zealand Open champions, received RM20,000 each as incentives. Andrew believes that the club system could be the answer for Malaysian badminton and quashed notions that the club were competing with BAM. Source:

Lack of competition in French pay-TV is holding down fees offered for rights to England’s Premier League in what could be a sign of things to come in other bidding markets, L’Equipe reported. Current Premiership rights-holder TPS is paying about €10 million per year for rights under an agreement expiring at the end of this season. However, that deal was reached when TPS was still in hot competition with Canal Plus for digital subscribers. Now that TPS and Canal Plus have agreed to merge, deflation is the order of the day. Canal Plus has offered less money than previously and its offer was the only serious one on the table following the latest tender for rights.

L’Equipe reported that the Premier League, which handles its own distribution, has indicated that it would not be willing make a deal at the lower price, especially given that rights fees have been climbing elsewhere, meaning that French viewers might not be able to watch the Premiership next season. Canal Plus' low bid is also sending a message to the French League, whose rights will be put back on the market in January 2008. Canal Plus is currently paying €600 million a season for those rights. “The goal (of Canal Plus) is clearly to force sellers of rights to re-evaluate their ambitions – and aim lower,” the newspaper said. Elsewhere/Rights: World Cup Winners to Remain on State Television

Rai, the Italian public-service broadcaster, has concluded a deal to televise the matches of the national soccer team for the next four years. The agreement with the FIGC, the Italian soccer federation, is worth €154 million ($205 million) and covers qualifying matches for the 2008 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup, a fixed number of four friendlies per season and coverage of under-21 matches.

The previous four-year deal between Rai and the FIGC was valued at €121 million and the increase can be attributed in large part to Italy’s triumph at this year’s World Cup in Germany. Pay-television broadcaster Sky Italia had also shown an interest in televising the national team’s games but will now have to seek deals with Rai and the federation to make this possible. Source:

Elsewhere/Rights: Foxtel Kicks in $5m More to Score AFL Rights

Pay-TV provider Foxtel is expected to increase its offer for AFL rights to $50 million a year tomorrow, in a last-ditch move to break a year-long stalemate with the Seven and Ten networks. The extra $5 million a year offered will include a contribution from regional subscription operator Austar, which last week confirmed it had opened separate negotiations to try to secure AFL games for its subscribers.

The decision has come after Foxtel has resolutely refused to move from its original offer of $45 million for four live games a week in the face of demands of $60 million from the Seven-Ten consortium. It is understood Foxtel's refusal to budge has been driven by James Packer, executive chairman of Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd, which owns 25 per cent of Foxtel. News Limited (publisher of The Australian) is also a 25 per cent shareholder, with Telstra holding 50 per cent.

A year ago this week, Mr Packer's late father, Kerry, set the scene for a bitter tussle over AFL rights when he approved a $780 million bid for the TV rights to eight games a week from 2007 to 2011. This was a 40 per cent increase over the cost of rights for the five seasons from 2002 to 2006. Foxtel agreed to contribute $225 million over five years, or $45 million a year for four live games a week.

A week later, the Seven-Ten consortium agreed to match the PBL bid under a first-and-last option acquired a decade earlier for $20 million. This meant Seven and Ten had to replicate the PBL deal down to the last detail. PBL's bid was for eight live games a week to be shown on free-to-air television, providing it could on-sell up to four games a week to pay-TV. The Seven-Ten consortium's problem was that it had no agreement with Foxtel, despite having negotiated since March. Source:

Elsewhere/General: New Owner For Poker-Based Golf Event

Mobile Nation Inc. has announced it has reached a deal to acquire 100% of the shares of World Series of Golf, Inc. The inaugural World Series of Golf tournament, with a first prize of US$250,000, will be hosted by the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from May 13-17, 2007 and is scheduled to be shown on NBC on June 23-24. The business plan is to roll out a series of satellite tournaments played in many North American locations.

The new format of the World Series of Golf allows for high stakes to ride on each shot. As in poker, players must ante up before teeing off at each hole. Depending on the outcome of the tee shots, the player can then raise, call, check or fold on subsequent shots, with the winner of the hole collecting the pot. When a player no longer has any chips to ante up, that player is eliminated.

The event is being coordinated by Octagon with Dan Baker serving as tournament director. Van Wagner Sports Group worked with tournament founder Terry Leiweke to secure the NBC relationship and will handle all of the integrated media and sponsorship sales for the event. Wasserman Media Group is to handle international television and new media rights sales. Source: Sports Media, 15th December 2006

Fifa's Appeal in MasterCard Case Unlikely to Succeed

Fifa’s decision to appeal against an adverse ruling by a New York court last week in the governing body’s high-profile dispute with sponsor MasterCard is highly unlikely to succeed, according to top sports lawyers contacted today by Sportcal.com. It emerged today that Fifa lodged an appeal against both the judgement in favour of MasterCard and the court’s jurisdiction over the case on Tuesday, the same day that it sacked Jérôme Valcke, the head of Fifa Marketing and TV, and three other top officials. But one top competition lawyer was scathing over the grounds for the appeal, saying: ‘It’s sort of a desperate appeal. They [Fifa] have been absolutely slated for their behaviour and they want to appeal on a jurisdiction point? It’s kind of sad. ‘In any case, how can they appeal after they’ve dismissed all these people anyway? ‘I think it’s unappealable.’Fifa itself appeared to admit wrongdoing in an internal Fifa memo, signed by Fifa president Sepp Blatter and general secretary Urs Linsi, and seen by Sportcal.com, which said: ‘Even though the judgment has undoubtedly proved to be very biased in favour of MasterCard, the fact cannot be overlooked that Fifa did not negotiate in the spirit of fair play.’

Another top sports lawyer said, ‘It looks like game, set and match to MasterCard to me,’ adding that he always advises federations not to offer such ‘first-refusal’ options to sponsors, although the sponsors themselves sometimes insist on them. The options, he said, are ‘intrinsically problematic.’ Had Fifa approached the European Commission over the first-refusal option when MasterCard first took legal action, it is likely that the governing body would have received an opinion that it was ‘unenforceable’ under European competition law.It could then have used this as the basis of its defence in court. However, the fact that Fifa did not raise this competition law point at first instance means, the lawyer said, that it cannot now be introduced as the grounds for an appeal. Callum Murray comments on
